SCIMA: A Novel Processor Architecture for High Performance Computing

چکیده
Clock acceleration and ILP extraction have drastically improved processor performance. However, performance of memory has not been improved so much as that of processor, thus the problem of performance gap between memory and processor, which is called memory wall problem, is becoming very serious. This will get more serious in the near future. We propose a new VLSI architecture which can solve this problem. Our architecture integrates softwarecontrollable memory into the processor chip. We have evaluated our architecture on Linpack benchmark and QCD simulation. These results indicate that our processor achieves high performance by using On-Chip Memory e ectively.

SCIMA: A Novel Architecture for High Performance Computing
Technological trends have brought the growing disparity between processor and memory speeds. This memory wall problem is becoming very serious especially in high performance computing. In this paper, we propose a new architecture SCIMA for solving this problem. In SCIMA, addressable memory is integrated into the processor chip besides ordinary cache. Since the on-chip memory is software control...

Processor performance has been improved due to clock acceleration and ILP extraction techniques. Performance of main memory, however, has not been improved so much. The performance gap between processor and memory will be growing further in the future. This is very serious problem in high performance computing because effective performance is limited by memory ability in most cases. In order to...

The performance gap between processor and main memory is serious problem especially in high performance computing. In order to overcome this problem, we have proposed a new processor architecture called SCIMA, which integrates software-controllable memory (SCM) into a processor chip as a part of main memory in addition to ordinary cache. SCIMA is defined as an extension of a general microproces...
متن کاملReducing Memory System Energy in Data Intensive Computations by Software-Controlled On-Chip Memory
In recent computer systems, a large portion of energy is consumed by on-chip cache accesses and data movement between cache and off-chip main memory. Reducing these memory system energy is indispensable for future microprocessors because power and thermal issues certainly become a key factor of limiting processor performance. In this paper, we discuss and evaluate how our architecture called SC...
متن کاملEmpirical Study for Optimization of Power-Performance with On-Chip Memory
Recently, power-performance (performance per uniform power consumption) has become a more important factor in modern high-performance microprocessors. In processor design, it is a well-known that off-chip memory access has a large impact on both performance and power consumption. On-chip memory is one solution for this problem, so that many processors such as the Renesas SH-4 and some ARM archi...
